Rewarding excellence
Jewellery Council of SA
Collection Awards Design Competition
The Jewellery Manufacturers’ Association of South Africa (JMASA), a division of the Jewellery Council of South Africa, invited designers, manufacturers, learners and apprentices you to enter the Jewellery Council Collection Awards Jewellery Design Competition.
The 2017 theme was “JEWELLERY FOR HIM”
For thousands of years, men have worn RINGS to signal status, wealth, commitment and association. A ring can send a message that he is not available, that he is part of a fraternal brotherhood, that he is from a culture not afraid to display wealth on the hands or he just wants to be trendy!
For a man especially, wearing a ring beyond the wedding band is a statement on its own.
Entrants were encouraged to think out of the box … use materials of their choice and to wow the judges. They were required to design and manufacture a ring that could be sold commercially. The two categories: CAD and handmade.
The prize giving ceremony was held at the industry Trade Show on 10 October, at the Sandton Convention Centre where the Jewellery Manufacturers’ Association of South Africa (JMASA) chairman, Colin Campbell, announced the winners.
The category winners each received a trophy of excellence (sponsored by the Ekurhuleni Jewellery Project), 750g of fine silver (sponsored by Cape Precious Metals), 250g Argentium silver (sponsored by Piyuve Jewellers) and free membership to the JMASA for one year as well as free access to the JCSA Trade Test Certificate. Moloto also received a CAD designer toolkit (sponsored by Metal Concentrators) while Nonku Dhlamini received a jewellers bench toolkit with manufacturing specific tools (sponsored by Metal Concentrators).
The winners were:
Kgomotso Moloto from Keith White Design was the winner in the CAD Category while Lumka Nonku Dhlamini also from Keith White Design was the winner in the Handmade Category of the 2017 Jewellery Council Collection Awards Jewellery Design Competition.
Zanele Shongwe from Design @ 50 was the runner-up in the CAD Category and Lincoln Mokoena from the Ekurhuleni Jewellery Project the runner-up in the Handmade Category. Both received 250g of fine silver (sponsored by Cape Precious Metals).
