Re-opening of the VAT Refund Office-ORTIA and CTIA

Dear Members

The Jewellery Council has been advised by the Tax Refund office/VAT Refund Administrators (VRA) that they will be re-opening the OR Tambo and Cape Town offices as of the 1st of May 2022.

Please be reminded of the following:

  1. We have been advised by SARS that all VAT refund claims lodged at OR Tambo International Airport are required to have a SARS Customs stamp on all tax invoices as “proof that the goods were declared for Customs purposes”. Paragraph 3 (1) (b) of the Export regulations provides that “the relevant goods must first be declared to a customs official before the claim for a refund of tax is submitted”. The inspection function is performed by the VRA at Cape Town International Airport.
  2. Proof of payment must be accompanied for all purchases above R 10 000.00 (VAT incl).
  3. We have been informed by SARS that for VAT refund purposes, they will only consider documents which read either the words, ‘Tax Invoice’, ‘VAT Invoice’ or ‘Invoice’(documents which bear the words ‘duplicate’, ‘copy’, ‘reprint’ will not be accepted).
