Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds
Updated 3/18/2026
The Jewellery Council of SA (JCSA) has formulated guidelines for recommended trade practices for laboratory-grown diamonds. The purpose of the guidelines is to promote consumer confidence by ensuring that consumers receive complete and unambiguous information about what they are buying and to ensure that the jewellery industry’s reputation is safeguarded.
What’s the difference, and which is right for you?
Today, buyers can choose between natural diamonds, mined from the earth, and lab-grown diamonds, created in advanced laboratories.
Natural Diamonds – Billions of Years in the Making
Formed under intense heat and pressure deep in the earth’s crust.
Each stone is unique, representing geological history billions of years old.
Often hold higher resale value and are prized for their rarity and symbolism.
Carry a strong sense of tradition and heritage.
Lab-Grown Diamonds – Innovation and Accessibility
Produced in high-tech labs using HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) or CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) methods.
Physically, chemically, and optically identical to mined diamonds.
More affordable — often 30–40% less than natural equivalents.
Viewed as a more sustainable option, as they avoid large-scale mining.
Comparing the Two
Feature | Natural Diamonds | Lab-Grown Diamonds |
|---|---|---|
Origin | Formed in nature over billions of years | Created in a lab within weeks |
Appearance | Identical to lab-grown | Identical to natural |
Resale Value | Typically higher | Lower resale value currently |
Price | Premium pricing | More affordable |
Sustainability | Mining has environmental and social impacts | Smaller footprint, seen as eco-conscious |
Which Should You Choose?
Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. The right choice depends on:
Budget – Lab-grown offers greater size or quality for less.
Values – Choose natural for rarity and heritage; lab-grown for sustainability and affordability.
Purpose – Engagement rings often lean toward natural; fashion and everyday jewellery may suit lab-grown.
💡 Tip: Always ask for full disclosure. JCSA-accredited jewellers are required to clearly state whether a diamond is natural or lab-grown.
