Understanding the 4Cs of Diamonds
Updated 12/12/2025
Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat explained simply.
When buying a diamond, the 4Cs are the universal standard for assessing quality and value: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight. Knowing how these elements work together helps you choose a stone that balances beauty, durability, and budget.
Cut – The Sparkle Factor
The cut of a diamond determines how well it reflects light.
A well-cut diamond sparkles brilliantly, maximising fire and brilliance.
A poorly cut diamond may appear dull, even if it is clear and colourless.
💡 Tip: Cut is often considered the most important “C” because it directly affects beauty.
Colour – Shades of Rarity
Diamonds range in colour from completely colourless to shades of yellow or brown.
Graded from D (colourless) to Z (light colour).
The less colour present, the rarer and more valuable the stone.
💡 Tip: Near-colourless diamonds (G–J) often appear colourless to the eye but cost less than D–F stones.
Clarity – Nature’s Fingerprint
Clarity measures the presence of natural inclusions (internal features) or blemishes (surface marks).
Graded from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1–I3).
Fewer inclusions = higher clarity and higher value.
💡 Tip: Many inclusions are microscopic — so a diamond can look “eye-clean” even if not technically flawless.
Carat Weight – Size vs. Value
Carat measures weight, not size.
1 carat = 200 milligrams.
Larger diamonds are rarer and more expensive.
But carat alone does not equal beauty — cut and clarity matter just as much.
💡 Tip: Two diamonds of equal carat weight may look very different depending on their cut proportions.
Balancing the 4Cs
A diamond’s value and appearance are determined by how the 4Cs interact.
A smaller diamond with excellent cut and clarity can look more impressive than a larger stone with poor cut.
Striking the right balance ensures you get beauty, value, and durability.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important “C”?
Most experts agree cut is the most critical, as it controls brilliance and sparkle.
Which “C” affects price the most?
Carat weight usually drives the biggest price jumps, but high grades in colour and clarity also add premium value.
Do lab-grown diamonds use the 4Cs?
Yes — both natural and lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same 4C system.
